NEW ALBANY, BRADFORD COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Plans are moving forward to rebuild the New Albany Community Library in Bradford County.
Directors met Monday afternoon and selected a new location to re-build on after flash flooding last month.
There is currently a gaping hole along Route 220 in New Albany borough.
The empty land is where the community’s library once stood welcoming readers for decades.
It was a community landmark.
“It meant a lot to the kids because they could go and get books, they had story hour, there was just a bunch of different things going on,” Linda Abrams of New Albany said.
The library was demolished after fast-moving flood waters from Ladds Creek wiped the library right off its foundation.
“Me and my wife actually enjoyed it, especially living across the street at the time. It was convenient. We both like to read,” Ray Sanders of New Albany said.
Locals say without having their library in the center of town it is much more difficult to get books. The nearest library locations are in Dushore and Towanda.
Library officials say they plan to rebuild.
They’ve already raised more than $10,000 towards the effort.
Library directors met Monday afternoon.
They voted to build on a new site at the corner of Front and Wood Streets, across from the borough’s old bank building. It is directly down the street from the location that flooded out.
The lot is being donated by the Dunn family and will keep the library in the heart of the community.
“If it’s close it’s right where people might be able to walk to it, get to it really easy,” Doreen Farmer of New Albany said.
The old library housed most of the borough’s history.
Connie Green’s mother collected a lot of information too and their family stands ready to help replace what they can.
“She saved everybody’s deaths and everybody’s marriages. I have a lot of her stuff, I still have for the library when we get the new one,” Connie Green of New Albany said.
