National Work Zone Awareness Week

News

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) Construction season is well underway, which means workers will be out.

This week is national work zone awareness. PennDot averages 700 people, workers and motorists, die each year in work zone related crashes. Speed and distractive driving play a key role in some of those deaths.

PennDot spokesman James May says pay attention to road signs and move over when approaching a construction zone.

“It’s just a reminder to all of us to slow down, put down your phone, pay attention, keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel and your mind on the task at hand and that should be driving your car,” said May.

Fines double and jail time increases for active work zone violations. That includes speeding, DUI, and failure to obey traffic devices. If convicted of homicide by vehicle, up to five years of additional jail time could be added.
