After being in the red for years, Nanticoke was recognized today for its fiscal improvements.
The Luzerne County city becomes the first city in the state to exit Act 47.
That is a state run plan that allows communities to work their way out of financial problems under the watchful eye of state officials.
Nanticoke officials applied for Act 47 nine years ago after facing a massive debt.
The city made several changes including raising earned income taxes. “That means they can invest in the community again. The city wasn’t able to invest in things we need, whether that’s streets, whether that’s sewer, whether that’s roads and parks… now they are going to be able to do that,” says Senator John Yudichak.
There are currently 19 municipalities in the state that remain under Act 47.
