Mount Pocono Residents: “Where is PennDOT?”

MOUNT POCONO, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – The Casino Theatre and Village Malt Shop is a popular place in downtown Mount Pocono.

“We have a lot of people because it’s so close. And it’s an easily walk-able town. So people walk across just to come visit us,” says Karen Struckle, president of the Casino Theatre and Village Malt Shop.

But residents say crossing the busy Route 611 in the downtown is a dangerous challenge. Cones and construction tape block off parts of the sidewalk. PennDOT is making almost a dozen curbs in the downtown handicap accessible.

“I’m very happy they’re doing that. So more people have accessibility,” says Struckle.

Once the handicap accessible curbs are complete, an even bigger road paving project starts through the Borough. That paving project was supposed to start last year. Mount Pocono Mayor Fred Courtright say PennDOT’s leaving him and Mount Pocono residents in the dark.

Mayor Courtright says, “we don’t really know when it’s going to be scheduled not unfortunately, that’s really a mystery to us because we can’t plan around that and we cant tell our residents when to avoid certain areas or when not to. “

We reached out to PennDOT. A representative says the handicap accessible curbs will be complete this Friday. Milling and overlay for the paving project will begin next Tuesday.

“It makes our town more attractive to have a nicer road,” adds Mayor Courtright.

Once the road is paved, there will be new concerns.

“The downside of being paved is people driving faster. And we have excessive speeds on this road everyday,” Struckle says.

After the paving project is complete, Mayor Courtright says the next step is addressing downtown traffic. He hopes to add signs, possibly a traffic light, or some marking to slow traffic down.
