ARCHBALD, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – A mother and son are facing charges in connection with a sex crime investigation in Lackawanna County.
Mathew Bryant of Archbald and his mother Joan Peterson were both arraigned around 4:30 PM at a magistrate’s office.
Mathew Bryant is facing a number of charges including aggravated indecent assault of a child and corruption of minors.
Investigators believe the 27 year old had sexual contact with two young girls between June of last year and late last month.
He is currently behind bars on $100,000 bail.
His mother, Joan Peterson, is being charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children.
The 58 year old has been released on $50,000 unsecured bail.
Investigators believe she allowed her son to have contact with the two young girls that he was having inappropriate sexual contact with.
Investigators believe there are other victims.
The investigation started last month when one of the young girls, who is only seven, told a worker about the abuse while in the emergency room at a hospital in Scranton. That worker called the ChildLine abuse hotline which launched the criminal investigation.
Detectives believe the abuse happened at locations in both Archbald and Dunmore so police from both departments are working together on the case.
