Montour County Commissioners accept $1M grant

DANVILLE, MONTOUR COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) The Montour County Commissioners approved a grant from Luzerne County flood protection authority to improve their levees.

The money will come from left over FEMA money. Danville Borough will increase its height on two levees to meet FEMA elevation flood levels. Since the levees settled over the years they have dropped six to 12 inches.

With grant money contractors will be able to raise the level back to its original state.

"It makes me and my family feel safer and I am sure just as well as my neighbors," said Marene Swartz of Danville.

"This grant for a million dollars is to put anywhere from six to a foot onto the dike from Grand Street to the state hospital," said James Hack, Montour County Flood Mitigation Committee.

It's unknown when the borough will start to raise the levees in Danville. To be informed more on the levees and Montour County protection the Mitigation Committee will hold a meeting May 15th.
