(WBRE/WYOU-TV) Not guilty… That’s what a jury had to say about a former Lackawanna County corrections officer accused of having inappropriate contact with a female inmate. George McHale was found not guilty on all charges. The jury reached that verdict after just a couple hours of deliberating Thursday afternoon. Our lead I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick has the reaction
An emotional George McHale says he has been living a nightmare for more than a year. Accused of forcing a female inmate to perform a sex act on him inside the Lackawanna County prison back in December of 2009. The jury did not believe the prosecution proved its case.
“I just want to go home and enjoy my life. I went through turmoil the last year and a half. I want to say one thing to my daughter Macy..I love you Macy, I love you honey” Said McHale.
McHale’s family and friends gathered around him outside the courthouse. They too had strong opinions on the prosecution’s case.
“This was a kangaroo court that they tried to run here today, for the last week. This man went through hell for the last week. He lost his pension, lost his livelihood. Now he’s got to fight back for that” Said John McHale, George McHale’s Uncle.
Others in the court felt the jury acted too quickly.
“‘The jury disrespected both sides by acting as quickly as they did. They had lunch I believe and they retendered a verdict in a very short period of time” Said Steve Corbett, of Scranton.
