Mine Subsidence Insurance: Do You Need It?

(WBRE/WYOU) — If you live near an old coal mine, your home may be in danger.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is urging homeowners to check if their property is at risk of mine subsidence.

It can cause severe damage to your home, which can lead to costly repairs or even make the property uninhabitable.

Regional spokesperson Colleen Connolly said people who live from Susquehanna County to Schuylkill County should see if mine subsidence insurance is recommended for their home.

“It’s not covered under your regular homeowner’s insurance, and you could have damages that cost $100,000,” said Connolly.  “If you don’t have the insurance, you’re left footing the bill, and that’s a pretty expensive bill!”

She said the mine maps have been updated, so even if you checked before, you should take this opportunity to look again.  Click here to learn more about the insurance options.
