NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Dozens of people laced up their shoes on Saturday to raise money and help honor a fallen corrections officer from Nanticoke.
Participants ran and walked in the third annual Eric J. Williams Memorial 5K race. The event at Luzerne County Community College is named in memory of a 31-year-old Federal Corrections Officer killed in the line of duty.
An inmate fatally stabbed Williams in 2013 at US Penitentiary in Wayne County. Williams’ family uses the race to raise scholarship money and awareness about the danger of being a corrections officer.
The death of Officer Williams inspired a federal law that allowed corrections officers to carry non-lethal pepper spray. Corrections Officers at Luzerne County Prison will start carrying the spray on Tuesday.
