Med-Ed Meets With Customers in Monroe County

Thousands lost power during two big storms in March, another in May

SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - On Wednesday night, Met-Ed officials met with residents from Monroe and Pike counties.

Thousands of customers lost power for days during two major storms in March, and another in May. They want to ensure a plan is in place for the future.

An open house at East Stroudsburg University's Innovation Center was held from 3-8 pm.

Richard Cullin lives in Smithfield Township. During the big snow storm in March, he lost power for seven days.

He recalls, "[it was] extremely uncomfortable. Most people I was more concerned with was more elderly people."

Richard is talking in-person with his power company, Met-Ed.

He adds, "a lot of our people were concerned with how the time to repair seemed as long or longer than Hurricane Sandy."

Met-Ed Regional President Ed Shuttleworth says it's important to hear about customers' experiences, while sharing information with them.

"We are working very hard to continue to improve service and improve our restoration times from lessons learned and meetings we've been conducting," he explains.

Wednesday's open house is an informal approach. Met-Ed officials were stationed at different tables around the room.

"We have all the different departments here that would be very beneficial, and all the right people here that could truly share good, quality information," Shuttleworth remarks.

Richard says he's learning a lot, and realizing the difficulties met-ed faces during storms. He adds, "the individual is saying 'I'm out of power and I'm angry.' These guys are simply trying trying their best."

A legislative hearing to address frequent power outages will be held Thursday morning from 10 am to noon at the Tobyhanna Township Municipal Building. Lawmakers from across the state will attend to hear testimony from emergency responders, local officials and utility companies.
