WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Luzerne County must raise its financial game in its effort to secure federal and state grants.
That’s the word from the county manager who says millions of dollars of government grants are out there but the county may not be doing enough to get them.
County manager Dave Pedri believes the county can and must to do a better job in finding outside money to pay for some upcoming big-ticket expenses. And he wants to hire a lobbying firm to do the county’s bidding.
“Are we being progressive? What’s the next step for Luzerne County?”
The answers to those question are easy for County Manager Dave Pedri. He says its time to hire a company to do nothing but fight for money for the county.
“This lobbying firm will give us that leg up when we are working with other governments, working with state governments, working with the federal government. This is an opportunity we have to explore.”
It comes at a time when the county is facing huge expenses $4 million dollars to replace voting machines and $20 million to upgrade its 911 system.
“I’ve seen very progressive counties and other progressive cities utilizing these types of firms. We have to get us to that point.”
The county council has the final say on the move council chairman says this could be a case of spending some money now ..to secure a lot more money down the road.
Pedri has been in contact with a Harrisburg firm that specializes in lobbying for government grants as well as looking for other possible financial resources that can benefit the county.
The county council will take a closer look at the issue at a work session on Tuesday… They are expected to make a final decision on April 23rd.
