(WBRE/WYOU) LUZERNE COUNTY – Locally, Muhammad Ali is being remembered as a beautiful person.
Calling himself the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali made an impact wherever he went.
Retired instructor Larry Angeles remembers seeing Ali win a match and that is what got him into the sport. “That was your ticket to strive on into the sport” Angeles says.
Kingston resident and boxing instructor Billy O’Rourke trained with Ali in Schuylkill County in 1981. O’Rourke recalls a surprise first encounter while sneaking a snack in at The Deer Lake Training Camp. “When we got into the kitchen, pitch dark to get some cheese, he was in the dark, in the corner and I met him for the first time…In the matter of thirty seconds he was dancing like a butterfly and he could catch flies with his hands” O’Rourke says.
O’Rourke remembers Ali as one of the kindest men he’s met. This is a lesson he now passes on to his boxing students.
