MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – You’re invited to watch the adorable sights and sounds of an active black bear den under someone’s porch in Monroe County. The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently launched a live stream on its website so you can witness wildlife, in real time, from the comfort of your home.
You might spot a tiny cub peeking out from its mother. Turn up the volume and you’ll hear the baby, too.
“The video is live streaming at my house 24/7, because it’s neat to see,” smiles Officer Bryan Mowrer, Game Warden, Pennsylvania Game Commission.
In late October, a homeowner contacted the Pennsylvania Game Commission after noticing a bear crawling under the porch. Game Warden Bryan Mowrer responded to the call and realized a sow was actively building a den.
He says, “she didn’t have cubs with her, so we knew she’d be having cubs right here in like early February.”
Last Friday, Mowrer carefully crawled in to the den and installed a camera on one of the porch joists.
Now, everyone in the world can watch nature take its course.
He explains, “we want to bring people the best experience to see these animals and live with them.”
The Game Commission says it’s fairly common for bears to build dens in residential areas, whether it’s under a porch or shed, because they’re adapting to development.
And this is the perfect spot for the momma bear and her cubs, because they’re blocked from the elements. Since the bear is hibernating, they won’t leave the den until next month.
“She doesn’t do much except sleep and breath. And these cubs are feeding on her when they’re hungry,” Officer Mowrer explains.
It’s still unclear how many cubs there are. And for the bears’ protection, we don’t know exactly where this den is located. Mowrer only says it’s in ‘a highly developed’ area of Monroe County.
He warns, “if we irritate mom enough, she would leave the den for her safety and she could abandon those cubs.”
As the weather gets warmer, the cubs will become more playful and you’ll see increased activity in the den.
