SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Christians around the world have started the solemn Lenten season with Ash Wednesday. It was when people traditonally have ashes marked on their foreheads in the sign of the cross.

Lent is the 40 day fast, signifying the time Jesus spent in the desert without food or water. Many people give up sweets or eating between meals.

Lent runs through Easter Sunday, which is April 21st this year.
