Lending a Helping Hand in the Community

News

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) ‘Get things done’ is the AmeriCorps signature phrase.   And that’s exactly what they’ve been doing all day long in Lycoming County.

Those who are a part of the organization have been busy lending a hand as part of “National AmeriCorps week.   Eyewitness News Reporter Morgan Parrish has our story.

AmeriCorps volunteers say their goal is to dedicate their time to improving the lives of so many while also strengthening communities.

For some, this week is a chance for them to step outside of the box and help in a different way.

“I’ve never worked at a food bank before but so far this experience is awesome.” Said Kearstin Calhoun of Milton.

“I, myself, and my team – we’re out here bagging apples.” Said Tiger Weaver, of Pittsburgh.

“We have been packing canned goods and other foods for the military families around the area.” Noted Brianna Traxler of Dayton.

These volunteers tell Eyewitness News that it’s doing little things like this that makes all the difference.

“Every day I wake up and I know I’m about to help some kids. It makes me feel good.” Said Weaver

“I feel there’s no better feeling than serving others and making them feel loved.” Noted Brianna Traxler.

Kearstin Calhoun says the decision to help serve others was an easy one.

“I grew up with an uncle with Down Syndrome and I’ve always just kind of enjoyed helping.”

As these hard workers boxed up sunflower seeds, canned tomatoes, and even Slim Jims…they all agreed on how important it is to raise awareness on community service.

“Getting the word out is like the biggest part of it, if not the biggest part of it other than doing the work itself.” Added Weaver

Six hundred AmeriCorps Volunteers will be in Williamsport for the rest of the week.

“AmeriCorps is sister to the Peace Corp and so I feel like it’s important for people to know and to celebrate those that are helping.” Added Traxler.

Whether you’re a new member or a seasoned volunteer it is  never too late to help make a difference.
