SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) A former Lackawanna County employe who is now running for county commissioner is defending himself.
George Kelly tried to buy county land through its repository as the county’s Department of Planning and Economic Development Director.
Kelly says he was working with developers in Olyphant to develop a 1,000 acre parcel that will create more than 5,000 jobs over the years. For more than $3,000 Kelly intended on purchasing five acres off the county in the borough.
“If I had to do it all over again I would buy it. It was the right thing to do. The last thing we wanted was some out-of-town investors or something or speculator to break up a deal that will have such a huge impact on Lackawanna County,” said Kelly.
The purchase was approved by the county’s tax office. Olyphant and the school district approved the project.
Kelly resigned as the director back in February after the county’s general council rejected the purchase.
