Kiwanis Wyoming County Fair Mixes New with Old

News

Meshoppen, Wyoming County — “Oh my God! I want one. I want one,” said a woman excitedly Thursday afternoon at the Kiwanis Wyoming County Fair. What she wanted was a baby Kangaroo but she couldn’t have it. Mayweather, an eight-month-old red kangaroo, is part of the fair’s new petting zoo exhibit. “When they see Mayweather sitting over here in a chair they enjoy being able to touch a kangaroo because it’s not very often you get to see a kangaroo,” said Terry Beal, the owner of Buffalo Beals Animal Park in Maiden, North Carolina.

The same can be said about some of the other animals Mr. Beal brought with him. “We’ve got an African porcupine. We have a cicada land tortoise walking around among the animals. We also have a capybara which is the largest rodent in the world.”

The petting zoo isn’t all that’s new. “We have a mechanical bull this year which we haven’t had in a few years. We also have a new livestock barn,” said Kim Scott who is the fair’s vice president and vendor coordinator.

Something else that is new this year repurposed something that is old. “It used to be our Pit where we had all our main stage entertainment. It is now called The Landing. We have filled it in this year. It took 22,000 truckloads of dirt to do so,” said Ms. Scott.

The former “Pit” will serve as a flat area to host new events while the main stage entertainment shifts to the fairground’s track. Ms. Scott explained the change saying, “This way, when we have it over on the track area we can expand. Our stage can be bigger. We can have the big screens that entertainers now use and we can have unlimited seating just about,”

Besides the new, you’ll find the same old fair favorites whether it’s something you want to ride or to eat. “We have all kinds of wonderful food, new food vendors, new commercial vendors,” said Ms. Scott. “The Kiwanis started this 30 years ago and here we are today getting bigger and better each year.”
