PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Almost everyone’s a race fan on Kentucky Derby Day, even if you didn’t bet on Country House.
If you weren’t at Churchill downs, no problem; many celebrated right here in Pennsylvania.
Race fans like Lisa Petillo filled the seats at the racetrack at Mohegan sun Pocono Saturday afternoon, all because they wouldn’t miss derby day for the world.
“Never dreamed this place was ever going to be the place where people would come and wear their big hats and do their thing for the big race.”
It’s the biggest party in the area, filled with live harness racing, a champagne brunch and a “run for the roses” hat contest.
“It’s the atmosphere. You know it’s like you almost feel like you’re there. It’s not the same of course being at Churchill Downs but we have the same kind of format with the hats and the horses” said Dale Rapson, Vice President of Racing Operations.
Those who participated in wearing their hats did not disappoint, and it wasn’t easy for Jennifer Starr, the racing marketing manager, to search for the winner.
“(We’re looking for) something unusual, something unique, something that’s horse themed or colorful and above and beyond.”
Aside from all of the eating the drinking and the hat contest, community members like Jaryl Scott tell Eyewitness News there’s one thing that keeps them coming back each year, and that’s all of the betting.
“It’s just, you’re picking out a horse and if it comes in.. If it wins, it wins. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. You’re just hanging out with your friends. We won the number one.”
Win or lose, those who came out to derby day say it’s a tradition that they plan on continuing for the rest of their lives.
