Millville, Columbia County (WBRE/WYOU) — A community enjoyed the lilting sounds of jazz music, to help out an elementary school teacher, who is going through the biggest struggle of her life.
The Millville High School band teamed up with four other high school bands in the area for a jazz evening to remember. But the night is more than just music – its also a fundraiser.
Band director Ted McCaffery said, “My kids don’t think about themselves. It’s about the group and when they thought of somebody else like this it was really nice.”
The beneficiary, Misi Wagner, knows the school halls well. The second grade teacher has taught in Millville School District for 18 years. But the dedicated teacher had to take a break, when she got stomach cancer.
“We thought that we got it all. But in August I got hit again. The cancer had come back, so I’m out for the school year,” she said.
In fact, the band director said lmost every student on stage Wednesday night, was shaped in one way or another by Ms. Wagner.
“It would be impossible to find someone who didn’t have her at one time or another, so we had to do this, we had to do this,” McCaffery said.
So the students hope to heal – with music. 100% of the proceeds from the jazz concert, will help Misi pay for her cancer treatment and expenses.
“We’re just overwhelmed with happiness,” she added.
The band director says they hope to turn the jazz benefit into an annual tradition.
