Investigators: “Spice” Led To Scranton Fire, Couple Arrested

Scranton, Lackawanna County — Two people are in custody in connection with Wednesday night’s apartment building fire in Scranton.  The fire along Capouse Avenue left more than 20 people homeless.

Police said Joseph Bergamino and his girlfriend, Denise Raymond, were smoking synthetic marijuana, or “spice”, in their room when the fire started.  Now the couple is facing criminal mischief and reckless endangerment charges.

Police said just one day earlier, Raymond admitted that she smoked “spice” and set her mattress on fire while she was high.

One of the fire victims told Eyewitness News that Raymond was asked to leave by 6 p.m. the night of the second fire, which started less than two hours after that deadline.

Police have responded to a surge of “spice” overdoses in the past few weeks.  Eyewitness News was there on Wednesday when Wilkes-Barre Police found two men underneath the Market Street bridge.

One of them was passed out, the other was barely conscious, and both of them are suspected of overdosing on “spice”.

Police said many of the patients are repeat offenders, including one man who has overdosed on “spice” about half a dozen times.
