Interstate 81 South in Lackawanna County partially reopens

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —

UPDATE 10:00 a.m. Wednesday:

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, officials reopened one lane of I-81 Southbound between Exit 197 and Exit 194.  The interstate had been closed since late Tuesday night after a multi-vehicle crash involving nearly a dozen tractor trailers.

PennDOT is reporting that Interstate 81 South is closed between Exit 197 (Waverly) and Exit 194 (Clarks Summit) due to a multiple tractor-trailer crash.

Also, due to the winter weather PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on two interstates in the region.

 PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

   

  • Interstate 80 in Luzerne County
  • Interstate 81 in Lackawanna, Luzerne and Susquehanna Counties
  • Interstate 84 in Lackawanna and Pike Counties.
