I-Team: YWCA Money Concerns

News

(WBRE/WYOU-TV) On the brink of closing its doors. The reason money troubles that made it virtually impossible to pay the bills… Lead I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick is working the story.

It was business as usual at the Hazleton Y-W-C-A Thursday. People working out not the slightest hint of trouble. But behind the scenes, there is much concern about financial concerns.

“We have a situation at the Y right now we are just in the beginning phase of putting together and mapping out a game plan as to where we stand and where will we be moving forward,” Said Lauren Sacco, Chairperson Hazleton YWCA

Lauren Sacco took over as the chairperson of the board last week. When the money troubles surfaced. She said she can’t say much as they conduct an internal investigation. But

“We are looking at keeping it on the up and up. We are in the process of discovering where we are right now and where our future will be moving forward..”

A future that was very much in doubt just last week. Until good financial Good Samaritans opened their wallets.

“We have met with the good people in this community and it was an honor about how many people came into the room who have made donations to help us in the short term while we figure out what our path is going to be long term” Said Sacco.

Folks who pay dues to the YWCA for membership say they too are concerned. And heard the rumors of possible closing.

“I’ve been hearing they were in a little bit of a struggle with money but right now they are coming together they are sorting it all out.” Said Frank Dagostino.

We asked Sacco if closing its doors is a possibility.   “Right now it’s not a possibility where we stand at the moment but we are investigating the situation and we will make a decision based on what we find from there.”

The I-Team has also confirmed that the Y-W-C-A lost its status as a nonprofit organization. Known as a 501 c-3 designation that allows it to accept financial donations from individuals. And those folks can write off those donations off as tax breaks…Y-W-C-A officials would not comment on that information.
