LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) An I-Team exclusive: It deals with larger than expected natural gas bills received by thousands of people across our region. Some of those customers say they suffered “sticker shock’ when they opened those bills.
They called the i-team and lead investigator Andy Mehalshick looked into it…
“I thought it was a mistake. I’m saying they made a mistake this is not right.” 77-year old Madelyn from Wilkes-Barre could not believe her eyes when she opened her monthly UGI bill and saw that she owed more than $700 dollars. Her normal bill is about $100 dollars a month.
“But I called them and I said what’s going on. Oh, they said ‘We had a glitch and we had to make up that back money’. For one me other people– I said we are on a budget because we have to be.” Noted Madelyn.
It turns out UGI did make a mistake with customers, like Madelyn who are on a budget plan.
“Their monthly budget was too low and at the end of the 12 month period, we do a reconciliation for the budget to the actual consumption. The actual consumption in these cases was higher causing the larger bill.” Said Don Brominski, UGI Spokesman.
Brominski says customers can set up a plan to pay the under-billed amount.
Madelyn thinks UGI should swallow it because they made the mistake!”
Bromnski notes that “UGI can’t eat that kind of costs. When a customer used their fuel they are responsible for it.”
State Representative Aaron Kaufer wants to make sure this doesn’t happen again. “We’ve been basically in contact with basically everybody. We talked with UGI the PUC trying to get to the bottom of this and make sure this is not going to be a reoccurring issue that’s happening.”
