HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) Is bigger better?
Not necessarily according to some parents in the Hazleton Area School District.
They have launched an effort that could lead to a break-away from Hazleton..
The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick is looking into this school district shake-up.
Rick Morelli is a parent and a former member of the Hazleton Area School Board. He is one of the driving forces behind the effort to have communities in the Conyngham Valley area join the Berwick Area School District.
“If the school district is not going to come up with a plan or say what our high school is going to look like in 10 years. I think we should look at neighboring school districts who have an interest in possibly taking over part of it and alleviate some of the overcrowding.” Said Morelli
Morelli and other parents reached out to Berwick School Superintendent Wayne Brookhart.. to see if there was an interest.
“We want to look at the way that everybody could feel their needs have been met not only Berwick and valley residents but also the Hazleton Area School District.”
And there is a lot to consider..
“I think it is still a fact finding to determine the ramifications educationally, financially, buildings facilities all of those things.” said Superintendent Brookhart
If all the pieces fall together. The Valley Elementary School would be part of the Berwick Area School district. Parents we spoke with say they are keeping an open mind about the idea.
“We could look into to see if it benefits the children of this area. This district is very large a lot of things going on here.” added Mary Susan Martonick, of Sugarloaf Township
The I-Team spoke with Dr. Craig Butler, the superintendent for the Hazleton Area School District.
He told me they are aware of this latest the effort of break away.
He insists that despite the issues facing hazleton..such as overcrowding,… It does provide a top notch education and he’s confident that parents will opt to keep their students in hazleton.
