I-Team: Cold Case Exhumations

News

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) State Police investigators have converged at two Luzerne County cemeteries today to exhume the bodies  of four victims of unsolved homicides.  Some of the cases date back to the early 1970’s.  The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick has the details.

Investigators have been here Maple Hill Cemetery in Hanover Township for several hours. This is the first step they say in getting justice for four homicide victims.

State Troopers and forensic anthropologists are here to exhume the remains of three adult murder victims.  They were murdered in the 1970’s.

They will then move to St. Vincent’s Cemetery in Courtdale to exhume the remains of a newborn boy who was found dumped in the old West Side landfill in 1980.

Troopers say they will use new technologies such as DNA testing to try to identify the victims.

The remains of all four victims were badly decomposed when they were found.
