SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Hundreds of people are vying for a handful of new jobs coming to Scranton.
Pennsylvania Medical Solutions is planning to open a medical marijuana growing and processing facility and the company says it has been overwhelmed by interested applicants.
The company held a career expo at the Radisson Hotel in Scranton Tuesday night.
It is looking to hire roughly 30 people in jobs ranging from security officers to expert growers and lab technicians.
The interest has been so high that more than 250 people registered to attend the career expo while another 500 people have already applied for jobs online.
Pennsylvania Medical Solutions is planning to open Scranton’s first medical marijuana company.
“I envision Scranton, our Scranton facility, being the busiest, the most substantial producer of medical cannabis here in the state of Pennsylvania,” Dr. Kyle Kingsley said.
Doctor Kyle Kingsley is the CEO of Pennsylvania Medical Solutions.
It is one of the first companies in Pennsylvania to get a grower/processor license.
The company has already started converting a warehouse on Rosanna Avenue into their new facility.
“Our mission is to treat patients. We’ve done that successfully in other states. We’re physician-led and very medically-focused,” Dr. Kingsley said.
After seeing just how much interest there is in the new jobs, the president of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce got excited Tuesday.
“This is encouraging that the work force is anxious to move up and improve their status,” Bob Durkin said.
Pennsylvania Medical Solutions expects to grow marijuana at its site in Scranton which will then be processed into an oil form.
While they will only hire roughly 30 people to start, the company says it hopes to grow over time.
The starting salaries will range between $15-$30/hour with some experts making up to six figures.
“We know they are a first class operation and we’re looking forward to them being a big contributor to this community,” Durkin said.
