Hershey Expands the Hazleton Plant


HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV)   It is known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth”.of course we are talking about Hershey Pennsylvania.Home of the Hershey Candy Company.
    But there is another place that is feeling pretty sweet today  The Hazleton Area.
That’s because the Hershey Company unveiled plans to expand its operation at the Humboldt Industrial park. The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick has the details.

The Hershey Company is expanding its production line for its popular “KitKat” bar.It’s a $60 million dollar investment and that translates into 120 new jobs..

On Friday, the company officials and VIPs broke ground for the expansion.  

“They are making a statement that they trust the people of northeastern Pennsylvania and it”s a $60 million investment in this plant that’s a lot of trust.” Said Stephen Knight, the manager of the Hershey Plant in Hazleton.

The plans were presented to a room full of employees wearing  Kit Kat t-shirts. The Hazleton Hershey plant employs 450 people. That number will increase to nearly 600 when the expansion is completed next year.

“This is an investment in the future to continue to grow and expand our leadership. I think for this community it’s important these are great high paying jobs..” Said Todd Tillemans, President Hershey U.S. Business.

The pay range is between 17-and-22 dollars per hour.

“These are high skilled high paying jobs, production technicians and roles in our maintenance organization,” added Knight

Current employees who were not quite sure what the big announcement was going to be today..were thrilled..

“I think it’s a good thing for the area the amount of jobs good paying jobs. You know for the stability for this plant it means a lot,” said Franco Deritis

 “It’s a great place to work. Everybody’s nice hey we make candy.” said Amanda Rodick, adding  “It’s candy its sweet sweetest place on earth..laughs.”

It’s also pretty sweet for nearby businesses like this Fuel On Convenience store.

“We could have more people coming in for gas and food and during lunch breaks and everything,” said Samantha Drumheller, Manager

  The Hershey company did not receive any state or federal grants for this expansion.
