News

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) The fight erupted on Monday after school about two blocks away from the Hazleton Area High School, near 19th Street.  In the video,  you can see students swinging at each other.  It lasted about 10 minutes.

Mark Harvey tried to break it up.

“I couldn’t believe it. It’s the first time I ever seen something like that..it happened on my property. I’m lucky nobody got really hurt that bad.”  Harvey says the situation just exploded.

“Everybody just converged right there by my garage. Cars were ripping up and down the street– burning rubber..it got out of hand.”

The video of the fight was sent to Hazleton-One blogger Shayne Balliet.

“There are parents putting kids out to school and i know a lot of children are afraid to walk here.”

Hazleton School Superintendent Dr. Craig Butler says school security can only do so much and does not have jurisdiction off school property. They are working with Hazleton police to deter brawls like this one. But he insists law enforcement can do only so much.

“I really want to urge parents to take ownership and take responsibility and know where their children are and what they are doing.”

School officials tell the I-Team students in the video ..if tracked down..could face some sort of punishment.

Anyone with information on the fight is asked to contact Hazleton Police.
