(WBRE/WYOU-TV) Montage Mountain is getting ready to host Pennsylvania’s first-ever National Championship Trail Half Marathon.
Eyewitness News Reporter Anja Whitehead takes us to Montage Mountain as runners prepare.
“It’s the perfect set up for a national championship race,” Said Ben Robinson, Race Director.
Montage Mountain is known for its skiing trails, but now that spring is here, it will soon be known for its running trials with the national championship trail half marathon race being held for the first time ever in Pennsylvania.
“To have it in Scranton is huge because normally people don’t see Scranton as a big trail community but we have the resources,” Noted Robinson.
A trail half marathon is much more rigorous compared to your typical city half marathon.
“There’s about 3500 feet elevation gain which is equivalent to running 3 and a half times up Montage Mountain. And there’s also really rough terrain, Pennsylvania terrain is known for being rocky and being a little more rugged,” Added Robinson.
This means you need special sneakers to keep you safe.
“These shoes they have a little treed on the bottom. They have a little bit of a grab so when you’re going up and down the mountains, you defiantly have less of a chance of slipping,” Said Robinson.
Though there are people coming to race from over a dozen different states, montage wants the locals to come out as well.
“Our local running community is really special. I just want them to know that anybody can sign up. Anybody can be a part of it even if you don’t want to race. You can come out and volunteer. But we’d be happy to have anybody for sure” Add Robinson.
If You’d Like To Compete You Have Until June 9th To Register.
