Gas workers help flood victims in Bradford County

Southwestern Energy Workers help in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, BRADFORD COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - It has now been more than a month since flash flooding destroyed homes and a community library in Bradford County.

Property owners in New Albany are getting help this week from natural gas company workers.

Employees with Southwestern Energy were hard at work Monday but they weren't on a well pad.

Over the course of this week, about 30 workers in all will give back to the community helping flood victims bounce back in New Albany.

"It's probably at least $100,000 or $150,000 of free work that we're getting from this well company. We are overwhelmed. We're overwhelmed, overjoyed!" Michelle Dunham, New Albany borough council president said.

Besides bodies, the gas company has also brought several pieces of heavy machinery to help clear trees and large rocks from people's properties.

For a small town that doesn't even have its own street-sweeper, this would could have taken a long time.

"About four or five months," Jeffrey McIntire, New Albany's only maintenance employee speculated.

Around 9:00 AM Monday morning, the Green family's backyard was filled with large rocks and stones. After nine volunteers spent a couple hours at the property, they were able to clear everything out.

Connie Green choked back tears after seeing the changes.

"We really, really all, they'll never know how much we appreciate it!" Connie Green of New Albany said.

Six weeks after all the flash flooding, officials in New Albany still have a long road to recovery but they say volunteer efforts like this give them hope because it shows that people still care.

"We have about ten homes that have no hot water tanks, no furnaces, I've been calling and emailing pretty much every agency I can think of," Dunham said.
