From Vacant Campground to Townhomes in Back Mountain

Harveys Lake, Luzerne County — There has been plenty of activity since mid-August along part of Route 415 in Harveys Lake. Some new townhomes, six in all, are under construction at what is now called Lakeway Village Townhouses. “It’s very exciting. This is actually a lot of fun for us to do,” said Mike Sobeck.

Mr. Sobeck, his brother and parents who formed Sobeck Family Limited Partnership were looking last winter for land to launch the construction project. They chose this 1.3 acre lot with a once popular past. It used to be a campground for motorhomes in the 1950s when the public flocked each summer to Harveys Lake and Hanson’s Amusement Park. But the park closed in the 1980s and the campground also shut down leaving the property vacant. “This has been an eyesore on the community for probably almost 30 years, maybe longer,” said Mr. Sobeck.

A Lakeway Village Townhouse will rent for $1,600 per month which includes sewer, snow removal and lawn care. Each two-story 1,600 square foot townhome is being built energy efficient with 3 bedrooms, a bathroom on both floors, a living room and what Mr. Sobeck considers the gem of the townhomes – the kitchen. “We have granite countertops and cherry cabinets. All of the appliances are stainless steel. We’re actually going to have a stackable washer dryer on the second floor close to the bedrooms to make life very easy and a 12 by 12 stamped concrete patio in the back. Five parking spaces for each house.”

Mr. Sobeck said the site’s location is ideal for renters looking to enjoy the best of both worlds. “Once you get to the lake you don’t have to drive all the way to the lake and around the lake to get home. You’re still pretty close to Dallas and the Wilkes-Barre area. You’re right on the highway here. It’s not too much of a drive.”

Borough leaders welcome the townhomes and their future occupants. “It’s going to help the tax base, the school district, our borough, the sewer authority so for Harveys Lake borough it’s a win-win situation,” said Harveys Lake Borough Council President Bill Hilburt.

Sobeck Family Limited Partnership expects to sign renters to three of the units at Lakeway Village next week. The townhouses should be ready for occupancy in February. You can learn more about the site by calling 570-239-8581 or by clicking here.
