Free Truck Driving Program for Military Vets

(Tannersville, Monroe County WBRE/WYOU) – Northampton Community College is looking for a few good men and women.

The college was awarded a $134,400 federal Department of Transportation grant that will allow the school to provide free commercial truck driver training to members of the military.

“This is gives them an opportunity to get off the unemployment rolls and do something that really suits veterans, because veterans are taught to be a little more self-sufficient,” Northampton Community College Director of Driver Training Tina Frindt said.

The college hopes to recruit, train and offer job placement assistance to 40 veterans, active members — including National Guard and reservists — as well as their spouses.

The free program will train participants to become Class A truck drivers and help them find jobs in the transportation industry.

More than 1,400 people have completed NCC’s truck driver training program, which has a high job placement rate of 90 percent.

“Just because you’re struggling doesn’t mean we’re going to just throw you to the waste side.  Our job is to help you get back where you need to be,” Frindt said.

To qualify for the program you must live in Northampton, Monroe, Pike, Wayne, carbon or Lackawanna counties
