Frances Willard Elementary School evacuated after fire

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- An elementary school in Scranton had to be evacuated because of a fire.

Firefighters say someone set fire to a roll of toilet paper in a second floor bathroom at Frances Willard Elementary School. The incident happened around 10:30 Monday morning as students were getting to school because of a two-hour delay.

Investigators say two school workers quickly noticed the fire. One called 911 while the other used a fire extinguisher to put it out.

Firefighters are now trying to determine exactly how the fire started.

"Ordinarily the students would all be seated in their classrooms and roll would have been taken and they would have all been accounted for and they would have known if one student went to the restroom," said Scranton Fire Department Assistant Chief Jeff White.

Because of the fire, students were taken to nearby West Scranton High School on buses. The students were brought back to Willard Elementary School about 90 minutes later.
