WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters in Luzerne County were called to a garage fire that spread to an attached apartment Friday afternoon.
The flames broke out on Metcalf Street in Wilkes-Barre Township. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Halecki said the blaze destroyed both buildings.
As it turns out, the fire was a little too close to home for Halecki. His house is just across the street and now has melted siding and smashed windows.
“I was worried about my property,” said Halecki. “But also the stuff that was on fire, that’s first priority.”
Halecki told Eyewitness News that half a dozen cars were damaged in the fire, but no one was injured.
He credits the quick response from crews all over Luzerne County who fought the flames as temperatures lingered in the teens.
The owner of the building said his tenant had used a wood-burning furnace to heat the garage before that fire broke out. A fire marshal will be investigating the cause.
