LEHIGHTON, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) Fire fighters from four different counties respond to not one but two fires at a Lehighton apartment building.
The first fire was reported around 10pm Sunday night in the 200 block of North 2nd Street. Firefighters worked to battle the blaze under bitterly cold temperatures. Crews were called out again around 8am for a second fire.
Water froze to practically everything the second it touched it. Firefighters deployed pools of water in case of hydrants freezing, but crews reported no major issues. There’s still a massive firefighter response at the scene this afternoon as crews continue to put the fire out.
No one was hurt last night, but two firefighters reported weather related injuries fighting the blaze this morning. The Red Cross is assisting nine people who were displaced.
The cause of the fires are undetermined, as State Fire Marshals continue their investigation.
The American Red Cross is opening a warming center at the Lehighton Recreation Center, 243 S. 8th Street, Lehighton, Carbon County, for those residents affected by a power outage related to today’s fire.
The warming center will remain open as long as utilities remain off during demolition of the fire-damaged building. Overnight shelter accommodations will be available at the recreation center if necessary.
The Red Cross is also providing nine people displaced from the building with emergency assistance for lodging, food and clothing following last night’s fire.
