Festival of Ice set for this weekend in Clarks Summit

CLARKS SUMMIT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – May the ice be with you – Clarks Summit is getting ready for Ice Wars!

For the past 15 years, Clarks Summit has been putting on a Festival of Ice. This year’s theme is Star Wars.

“We have the most ice carvings ever! We have over 60! Every year it keeps on growing, we try to add new things to keep it interesting keep people coming back to the area and the businesses involved,” Janice Bevacqua, president of the Abington Business and Professional Association, said.

Mark Crouthamel has been carving ice for over 20 years. He tells Eyewitness News it all started a culinary school.

“As a chef, I had the opportunity to carve ice and that’s where I really got my start to it and over the next 5 years, I developed that and started a company,” Crouthamel with Sculpted Ice Works said.

With ice festivals, weather plays a big role.

“Great weather this year, it’s great for the people and great for the ice,” Crouthamel said.

This year, the festival added a Comic Con and an ice carving competition.

“Unless you go to the Comic Con, everything else is free. You can come Friday night, there’s free face painting for the kids, there’s carriage rides, the trolley will be here. There’s just so much going on,” Bevacqua said.

The Festival of Ice starts Friday, February 15th and runs through the weekend. Eyewitness News’ Nick Toma will be participating in the amateur ice carving event on Sunday.
