EAST PENN TOWNSHIP, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Should a farm be able to use treated sewage sludge as fertilizer?
That question has turned into quite the controversy in a Carbon County community.
East Penn Township hired a law firm to appeal a decision by the Department of Environmental Protection, approving Maryland-based company Synagro to use the sludge, also known as biosolids, on Neverdone Farm.
At a special meeting Thursday night, the township supervisors listened to concerns about the impact on residential wells and trout fishing in Lizard Creek.
“I have the right to clean air, a clean property, and I shouldn’t have to worry about what someone else is doing interfering with mine!” said neighbor Arthur Shreffler.
The son of farm owner Dennis Cunfer said he didn’t have a comment but told the crowd he doesn’t plan to back down.
