WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – There is an effort underway to spruce up underneath the Market Street bridge.
Marked by graffitti and overgrown weeds and grass, Wilkes Barre natives Kevin Harger-Blizzard and Liz Clements want to give back to their community by beautifying this space and creating a “Market under the Market” Street bridge.
The idea is to have food trucks, movie nights and arts and craft vendors two weekends out of the year. Harger-Blizzard and Clements say the focus is to highlight more of the arts in the community and they are looking for graffiti artists to decorate under the bridge.
The initiative is still in its early phases.
“There is a lot of paperwork involved with bringing together a new group of volunteers,” said Harger-Blizzard.
That’s just half the job.
“We need to level the ground and make sure its safe for people to use,” said Clements.
People who frequent the area on foot or on bike say the space could use some sprucing up.
“It’s nice to have someone clean it up make it more accessible to our young people and to all the people who walk in this area,” said Wilkes-Barre resident Ann Webster.
With this bridge connecting Wilkes-Barre to Kingston, volunteers hope this initiative brings the two communities even closer.
