WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – A plea for help tonight for children and families in crisis.
Luzerne County Children and Youth Services (CYS) are in need of all types of clothing… especially for younger children.
So a clothing drive is now underway.
You’ve heard the old saying ”appearances can be deceiving”?
Well that is the case with this apparently full closet of clothes inside the Luzerne County Children and Youth Services offices…
“It may look like a lot but it goes very fast”, says Deputy Director Deanna German.
She says the number of children in crisis is growing every year…for 2018 800 families fell under CYS supervision and 500 children were placed in foster
“We take kids from their homes when there is an unsafe situation,” says German “At times we can only take the children with the clothes on their back and sometimes those clothes may not be in the best condition.”
So, clothing collection bins, like this one have been placed in county owned buildings…
Says German “Currently we are in need of clothing of any kind of clothing. Children’s sizes 3T to 5T that’s what we have the least amount of clothes right now.”
And those donations allow the agency to save money which can then be spent on hiring more CYS caseworkers.
“This will absolutely help costs to not only the county but to foster parents when they are called up,” says Luzerne County Manager David Pedri. “They don’t have anything for them. Sometimes grandparents, aunts, are in need of help they need something right away.”
While the clothing bins will be out through the end of April, CYS officials tell us donations are gratefully accepted all year long, since the need never goes away.
Clothing articles that are most in need are t-shirts, sweatpants and leggings and the donations are tax deductible.
