DELAWARE WATER GAP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – A Facebook photo of a smiling couple about to welcome their baby girl into the world sheds light on happier times.
A year later, Morgan McGee is dead and her boyfriend is accused of pulling the trigger.
Before allegedly shooting the mother of his child in the face and chest, a neighbor heard Eric Jones talking down to McGee inside their home in A Pocono Country Place. There was a reported physical fight between the two. Police say Jones had a scratch on his face and told a friend he hit McGee.
According to court papers, the neighbor heard shouting. Then, that neighbor heard a gunshot followed by a woman screaming. A second shot rang out and the house went silent.
“If there were guns in the house, there have been threats of physical violence before, if there’s drugs involved, all of these are indicators of possible lethality,” says Lauren Peterson, Executive Director of Women’s Resources of Monroe County.
Women’s Resources of Monroe County helps victims of domestic violence, which can be physical or emotional.
“It all revolves around actually controlling another human being and holding power over that other person,” Peterson adds.
Experts say many times, victims don’t realize they’re victims. That’s why it’s important for family and friends to step up. They should offer support and refer their loved one to an organization, like Women’s Resources.
Don’t wait until it’s too late.
“Some of the signs for domestic violence would be someone whose constantly wondering what you’re doing, who you’re with, going through their phone,” Peterson explains.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, Women’s Resources of Monroe County can help. The organization has a 24 hour crisis hotline.
