Diocese of Scranton employees receive scam text messages

News

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) If it’s not a tax scam it’s something else.

The diocese of Scranton is warning its parishioners about a scammer impersonating a priest to get money.

Two employees of the Diocese were targeted with the scam Wednesday afternoon. While both did not fall for it, the scammer wanted them to pay $500 in Google Play gift cards. In the next messages the person said he’s checking on a friend at the hospital and that it’s his niece’s birthday.

He promised her the gift cards and can’t go and get them. The employee picked up on the scam knowing the priest was not serving in the 11 counties of the diocese.

“That wouldn’t be something out of the ordinary because of my work here with the Diocese. Initially I just assumed that it was from one of our programs or events going on,” said Dominick Costantino, Vocation Program Coordinator at the Diocese of Scranton.

If you are part of any scam you are asked to contact your police department.
