PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — All eyes will be on Churchill Downs Saturday for the 145th Run for the Roses. Big news out of Louisville this morning is that a 2nd Kentucky Derby hopefull is now out of the race.
Trainers say Haikal is scratched from the Derby because of an abscess on his left front hoof. Earlier this week, Omaha Beach, a 4 to 1 favorite, dropped out because of a respiratory infection.
Oddsmakers now say this makes Game Winner a slight favorite to win the first jewel of horse racing’s triple crown.
Big crowds turn out for the race, even here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, with many heading to Mohegan Sun Pocono to enjoy Derby Day festivities. While some head there to watch the race, others are out to enjoy the fashion.
“Kentucky Derby Day is really your day to shine,” Jennifer Starr, Racing Marketing Manager said. “So go big. Go broad. Go colorful. Go fun. However, if you don’t feel comfortable wearing a gigantic hat, maybe if you’re not really tall or that’s not the way you want to go, then go with a fascinator on a headband.”
For men, style is equally important.
“There is no such thing as going too crazy,” Starr said. “I’ve seen suits with horses all over them. I’ve seen pink and yellow and bright mint green on guys. It’s your day to come out and look your best.”
Once you’re all dressed up, looking your best, you’re ready for the other Kentucky Derby staple…the Mint Julep.
“While you’re out there schmoozing with all of your friends, a mint julep in hand is a definite essential,” Starr recommended.
Kentucky Derby Day events at The Downs at Mohegan Sun get underway at 9:30 am. NBC’s coverage of the race begins at 2:30 pm.
