Delivering Hope to Chemotherapy Patients

News

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Sometimes to make the biggest difference, it only takes the smallest act of kindness from a stranger. That was certainly the case at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono.

For six hours straight on Friday’s, David Choice of Tobyhanna is hooked up to a machine. The 60-year-old is undergoing Chemotherapy for bone cancer.

“You get depressed,” David Choice of Tobyhanna explains.

David doesn’t know a surprise visitor is heading his way, and she’s carrying hope in her hands. It’s called a ‘Chemo Care Bag’.

“It gives you an uplifting spirit, to know someone really cares for you like that,” Choice smiles after receiving a bag.

HK Mission, through Innovation Church in Cresco, put together 133 bags and delivered them to the Hughes Cancer Center. Newly diagnosed patients will receive one during their first round of Chemo.

“Their first Chemo treatment is a very scary time, they don’t know what to expect. So we do items in the bag that provide comfort,” explains Dawn Rack, founder of HK Mission.

Tucked inside, patients will find a warm blanket, playing cards and other games to keep them occupied.

“Their faces light up every time. And when they come back for their second treatment, I see them carrying them,” says Aalih Hussein, Oncology Social Worker with Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono.

Families in the community sponsored the bags, either in honor or in memory of their own loved ones touched by cancer.

Dawn Rack founded HK Mission in honor of her mom, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1999.

She says, “we’re hoping her death makes a difference in other people’s lives.”

David says it’s working.

“This is wonderful, this is the greatest thing to happen,” he smiles.

Delivering hope to those who need it most.

HK Mission delivers ‘Chemo Care Bags’ once a year. Volunteers also put together activity bags for LVH-Pocono’s pediactric unit.
