DANVILLE, MONTOUR COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) A local school district is bucking the statewide trend of cuts by looking to expand some programs.
Danville Area School District will soon be conducting a feasibility study to determine whether they can afford a new auditorium and other upgrades to the school.
Eyewitness News Reporter Cody Butler visited the district today and has more
An empty green space outside Danville Area High School’s gymnasium could be the location for a new auditorium.
That’s something Rebecca Pritchard, the middle and high school choir director says, would be a blessing.
“At the high school my classroom is the cafeteria, it is the only space that holds enough, that has a big enough space to hold my choir of 132.”
And it’s a choir that keeps growing.
The middle school is the only school in the district with an auditorium.
Rebecca’s choir class has to share the stage at the middle school with several other programs at this and the high school.
Now, the district is about to launch a feasibility study to see whether building an auditorium is the right path.
“Really wrap it up into a package that the board can take a look at and make a good decision into whether or not this is what we want to do to move forward. ” said Charles Smargiassi, Principal
The package will include more than just an auditorium.
“The school says, the study will also determine if it is feasible to add science labs and technology programs. Along, with a new turf for the its football field and track.”
The estimated cost – about 8 million dollars.
The district says, it hopes to pay for it with loans or a bond.
In any case, an auditorium, for its students, is top priority.
“the auditorium is used by everybody in the community. It’s used by every performance group we have in the district.” noted Pritchard
A cascading affect between departments that could soon be resolved.
The district will soon be opening bidding for a feasibility study.
