Crews Gutting Former Bon-Ton for ShopRite at Stroud Mall

STROUD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – A redevelopment project in the Poconos is inching closer to reality. Crews are now gutting the former Bon-Ton at the Stroud Mall, to make way for a new ShopRite.

The former Bon-Ton looks a lot different this week. By this fall, the shuttered building will be home to an 87,000 square-foot supermarket.

“I think it’s a good idea. First of all, the one in Stroudsburg is older. It’ll be nice to have something new like that here. Tremendous parking, and it’s right off the highway,” explains Bruce Green of Bushkill.

When CBL Properties officially announced the plan last summer, developers said the new ShopRite would include a health and wellness department, led by a registered dietitian.

“I think it’s a good idea and I certainly will shop there,” smiles Glendora Henning of East Stroudsburg.

But not everyone is excited.

“It’s a major loss for us in East Stroudsurg who go there. And I’m only like two or three blocks across the bridge,” says a man who identified himself as ‘Denie’.

Shoppers have noticed malls, including Stroud Mall, are struggling to survive. They say it’s important to think outside of the box for ways to bring customers in.

“I think it’s a good idea to work on it and build it up, definitely,” Green adds.

By closing the current ShopRite on McConnel Street and moving it about three miles away to the mall, some customers do have concerns.

Henning says, “it is a traffic problem but I’m sure they’ll take care of it.”

It’s unclear what’s in store for the space where ShopRite is currently located.

Eyewitness News visited Stroud Mall’s management office for comment, but a note on the door says it was closed for the day.

Stroud Township supervisors said they have no new updates to share.
