Countdown to final football game between fierce rivals

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The countdown is on to the end of a bitter rivalry between two Wilkes-Barre Area high school football teams.

Thursday night a longtime tradition for the G.A.R. Grenadiers came to a close.

Marching to the beat of the drums, band members, cheerleaders, and players made their way from G.A.R. High School to the field on Stanton Street in Wilkes-Barre.

This pep rally marks the end of an era in the Diamond City.  G.A.R. and Meyers will face off for the last time on the football field this Saturday.

The fierce rivalry has reached its finale after the school board approved a consolidation plan of all three city schools.

Alumni spanning over several decades joined the team for the annual bonfire, reminiscing on the past as they look forward to the future.

Kickoff is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m.  Tickets are sold out, but Eyewitness News will have highlights on the Saturday Night Sports Show.
