Snydersville, Monroe County — “I grew up with Phil. I’ve known him all my life,” said Robert Goffredo of Bangor as he choked up with emotion outside Pocono Mountain Harley Davidson in Snydersville. He was talking about his longtime friend, 50-year-old Phillip Caiazzo of Roseto – a borough councilman and member of Colombia Fire Company. “He was great for the community. He was always there for everybody.”
Tragically, Mr. Caiazzo lost his life Friday night. State police say he was riding his motorcycle along Route 33 in Snydersville around 9:30 p.m. when he struck debris on the shoulder of the highway. Goffredo’s daughter, Gianna, says Caiazzo’s girlfriend was also on the motorcycle. “They went just a little bit off onto the shoulder and the four by four was there and they hit it and it just took the bike. There was no him stopping it.”
The girlfriend, identified as Lisa Perin, was not seriously hurt. Gianna Goffredo, who considered Mr. Caiazzo family, was stunned when she reached out to her dad Friday night to find out about the victim’s condition. “I texted him about 10:45 and said how is he and he just said he’s gone. (roar of motorcycle) So…”
Troopers say Mr. Caiazzo was not wearing a helmet when he crashed. “His girlfriend had his helmet on so he didn’t have it on,” said Ms. Goffredo.
Mr. Goffredo says he would often ride motorcycles with his lifelong friend. “We rode a lot together” and added “Oh, yeah he loved it. It was one of his passions. It was his favorite pastime.”
Now that he’s gone, the Goffredos say Mr. Caiazzo will be missed by many. “He was really there for everyone. If you needed something, Phil was the person to call. He was just so friendly. He was a big biker guy but had the biggest heart and was like a big teddy bear,” said Ms. Goffredo while her father added,
“He just had a big heart. Big man with a big heart.”
