Consequences For Drug Overdose Victims?

News

(WBRE/WYOU) — Should drug overdose victims be required to go to rehab?

One state lawmaker thinks so, and he introduced legislation that would toughen an existing Pennsylvania law related to drug overdoses.

State Senator Gene Yaw said his proposed bill would require an overdose victim to obtain treatment within 30 days after receiving emergency medical assistance in order to qualify for immunity or face jail time.

Senator Yaw said no single piece of legislation will solve this problem, but his bill is another tool to save lives.

“It hopefully addresses some of the reservations from police officers about not getting help for the people and they keep seeing the same people back again,” said Senator Yaw.  “The other benefit is that it actually provides an incentive, a forced incentive, for the person who overdosed to actually get some help.”

Senator Yaw said this bill would continue to protect the people who call 9-1-1 to report an overdose.
