TOBYHANNA, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Sometimes, the most productive conversations are brewed up over a cup of coffee. On Thursday, Congressman Matt Cartwright held a ‘Coffee With Your Congressman’ event in one part of his district.
Constituents filled up on coffee, donuts, and conversation with Congressman Cartwright.
“I mean, you’ve got to stand up and deal with the heated issues,” says Robert Plant of Tannersville.
Cartwright held the informal sit down at The Mountain Center in Tobyhanna.
A variety of issues were brought to the table including safety concerns at the five points intersection in Mount Pocono, environmental and immigration worries, plus the partial federal government shutdown.
“I was glad he sat at our table and was forthcoming with his stands and his viewpoints,” says Tom Filla of Tobyhanna Township.
Cartwright expressed his thoughts about President Trump declaring a ‘national emergency’ in order to get his border security wall.
“I don’t think it’s going to work. I think there are a lot more pressing concerns,” says Congressman Matt Cartwright, [D] 8th Congressional District.
Cartwright is in favor of securing our borders, but says it needs to be done legally. Friday morning, Democrats will introduce a resolution in Congress, hoping to overturn President Trump’s ’emergency declaration’. “I’m for it,” Cartwright adds.
Cartwright is a big proponent for bringing a passenger rail system back to Northeastern Pennsylvania, although he says it’s a long and slow process.
“But I’m not going to stop working on it because the benefit that would come to this area is massive,” Cartwright adds.
This is part of an ongoing series of events Congressman Cartwright will hold across Pennsylvania this year. He represents Lackawanna, Wayne and Pike counties, plus portions of Luzerne and Monroe.
