Church in Schuylkill County aims to help addicts

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – About 13 people died every day of drug overdoses in Pennsylvania according to the drug enforcement administration.

One church in Schuylkill County is stepping up to help people ‘rebound’ from addiction.

17 year old Brieze McCabe lost her battle with addiction on June 11th.

Corey McCabe, Brieze’s father, wants to help prevent this from happening to others.

“I want to assist other families and other people with substance abuse disorder to prevent other parents from going through what I am going through.  That’s why I advocate.”

That’s why Corey is participating in freedom in Christ church’s 3 on 3 basketball tournament

It aims to be a game changer for people in Schuylkill county battling addiction.

Joe Krammes, from the Freedom in Christ Church, said “Every family has someone they know or someone who has been affected by it. We have all been to funerals of people who have died from this epidemic.”

The event raises money for the “Hope Initiative” and “Renew U”

These programs take a spiritual approach to recovery which church leaders believes gives people to succeed.

Pastor Mark Hochgertel, Freedom in Christ Church
“Our belief is that for someone’s life to change their heart has to change first. And we think the road to a heart change is through faith and Jesus Christ.”

Basketball players ages 7 to 17 competed for the top title in their age group

But the true mission of the event was understood by even the youngest players, players like 8-year-old Ayden Flannery.

“I feel bad for them but I feel good we are raising money.”

There will be a drug awareness day on August 18th at Barefield Park in Pottsville, all are welcome to attend.
